Thrash Funk? That’s a new one for me. Let’s give it a go. Another concept instrumental generated by a band from Texas named LITTLE BRIAN. The band has a lot of people in it, 9 pictured and 11 credited. Bring in Grandma what the hell!

The first cut “Slow Greasy” is just that. If I had to paint a picture for this song, it would be soft porn for sure. Next cut “T-1000”we find a very progressive funk tune with horns. Pretty cool! I would have made better use of the horn section with better arrangements. (That’s the Drum Corp in me coming through!)

4 cuts in and I’m still not getting the trash part. There is a lot of power funk though. Ok to me I am feeling a bit of a JAM Band vibe going on here. The guys can play. There is talent but it is getting a bit boring. Nice drum chops in track 5 “Animal Cruelty” by Butch Smith who has some very fast hands and holds everything together nicely! Track 6 “Car Chase” is just that. Sounds like an old Steve McQueen movie on steroids! “Slaughter Seals” has a nice baritone sax part but it gets mundane after that. Again, I would make better use of the horn section. Ok the next tune titled is “Thrash Funk.” Yes, there is the hyper drive funk jam on this one, followed by a lot of staccato done at once by everyone dominant on the whole CD. There is also a lot of unison parts played which is a bit much for the amount of musicians in the band, spread it out a little. Cut 10 “Symphony” has a nice piano part, which shines through but the staccato parts cut it off and make it Blah! The last cut “Party” is a very cool funky tune. There are better arraignments for the horn section, the keys shine and the band really jams out. This is the best cut on the CD !

On the CD sleeve it states, “Music is only half the story. To fully grasp the meaning and purpose, read the novel ‘Little Brian’ by Tarah Damask.” I guess I will never get the full grasp. Who has time in this day and age to read a novel? The band has an interesting concept, and maybe with a vocal here and there it would round it out a little. With 9+ people in the band, I am sure someone could sing or better yet-SCAT!

The band is very good and it is a good 1st go around for the Texans.

Rock On!
