“The Greatest Wonder” is the third release from KHYMERA and the second to feature the vocals of melodic rock mega-producer Dennis Ward (PINK CREAM 69). After the release of the debut record in 2003, which had vocals supplied by the legendary Steve Walsh (KANSAS, STREETS), Ward came on board with this project and they really haven’t missed a beat.
The music is pretty much paint by numbers (but done well) melodic rock and AOR. The songs range from mid-paced numbers to ballads just like any self-respecting AOR fan would like them done.
Some standout tracks include “Beautiful Life” with its melodic vocal lines and the ultra-catchy “Borderline” with its infectious sing-along chorus, fluffy keyboards and anthem-like guitar solo. It actually reminds me a bit of vintage-era Rick Springfield!
Most of the rest of the album is more mellow or mid-paced with a couple decent ballads in the form of “Love Has Been And Gone” and “If I Can’t Be”. The album ends on a slightly more rocking note with “The Other Side”.
All in all “The Greatest Wonder” is a good melodic rock/AOR release with just about flawless production but I would have liked to have heard a few more rocking songs added in the mix to liven things up along the way.
