Why was I drawn to these Floridians named UNMASKD? You know every once in awhile you do some surfing on MySpace and find bands that really have a flare for success. It doesn’t happen often but when I get lucky I strike gold and that is the case with UNMASKD. The Christian rockers did release a full length CD last year titled “RF” and are back again with a fresh new EP called “Higher Than Before”.

The opening track “Broken Walls” is the main reason why I contacted UNMASKD. This soft sensitive ballad shows class and with some tantalizing acoustic strumming and uplifting vocals by Ju which puts UNMASKD above others in my book.

“Higher Than Before” is a much more aggressive tune yet at times still has an AOR vibe. Loved the little instrumental jam in the middle of the track and the screams are so tasty it gives the song a full-on effect.

The subtle keyboards by Alex Diaz really make a difference on “I Can’t Believe”. I know these guys are known for their Christian rock style but I’m sure they can reach out to a large number of genres. Don’t let the Christian tag shun you from the great music by UNMASKD. These guys are playing from the soul and you can feel the aura of a higher power driving them to greatness.

Listening to “Obsession”; I feel comparisons to Jeff Scott Soto and Lenny Kravtiz at times but they sure have their own style. I’m big on keys and Alex Diaz brings the perfect touch to the band. It’s not overdone but the keys are subtle and give that little extra push to the band giving them an arena rock feel.

I’m not one for rapping but at times when mixed with alternative rock and screams it shows diversity in a band and when done to perfection like on “In Your Eyes” it gives it that little kick, enough to wake the dead.

Saving the best for last, “I Need You” is a soft rocker that touches the heart. The warming feeling you get from Ju’s vocals puts you in a state of calm. I enjoyed this CD a lot so if you get a chance check these boys out.
