Power Quest's 2nd release and first on Frontiers Records, "Neverworld" is full of power metal hymns, up-tempo songs, and even a ballad! This album would have been right at home released in the mid-1980's and it sounds just as good now.
Even though their sound is clearly influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Freedom Call, and the like... they have an underlying up-beat sound similar to The Scorpions and (more evident) Van Halen. The keyboard playing of Steve Williams takes a lead role in most of the songs, instead of just being an instrument that complements the guitars, as in most metal.
'Edge of Time' sounds a lot like '1984' Van Halen, but with a metal edge. 'For Evermore' also has that VH keyboard and guitar sound. Strange as it may sound, Power Quest pulls in all these influences and makes them sound good! 'Lost Without You' adds a touch of progressiveness, while 'Sacred Land' and 'Well of Souls' adds some speed to the album. 'When I'm Gone' is a ballad and the album has a lot of very catchy tunes that are full of hooks and solos.
Granted, there's not a lot of originality to the sound - so if you're looking for something new, you're not going to find it here. But if you're a big fan of '80's power metal bands with a lot of melodic overtones - you've found an album that you'll be listening to on a constant basis. I know I will!
