There is an old saying that goes you gotta give credit where credit is due.
Paul Sabu came on the scene in 1984 with KIDD GLOVE and in addition to being an Emmy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist his list of credits is stunning. Bangkok Rules is the title of Sabu’s latest, which will hit stores on April 23, 2012. After giving the disc a couple spins I can say Paul sure has set out to shock the world once again.
The disc opens with “Rocked & Loaded”, which will surely rock the house. Pure power rock to the fullest with tantalizing melodies and power chords and a perfect fit for an opener. The title track “Bangkok Rules” really has that same feel as the mighty WHITESNAKE. Paul puts forth an amazing array of vocal ranges and screams that highlights the track plus the guitar work on this track is killer.
“Read My Eyes” has a Middle Eastern vibe and for me it gives homage to his father the multi-talented Indian star Sabu of Jungle Book fame. Even the soaring guitar work puts you in a mindset of Paul conquering a goal.
Right back to the rock and one of my favorite’s on Bangkok Rules is up next. “Rock Don't Run” features Frankie Banali (QUIET RIOT) stepping in to handle drumming duties. This one should be a crowd pleaser. Love the keys that mix well with the middle section which gives a heavier sound to the overall effect.
“Black Star” is my highlight track on Bangkok Rules. The song is trance-like but once Sabu’s vocals hit then the sparks fly. Sit back and listen with eyes closed during the chorus as Paul has a touch of Ronnie James Dio to his voice. Paul really turns it up a notch on this one and it don’t stop there, check out “Race to Nowhere”, this is the one to bust the charts; just a powerful anthem is the only way to describe it.
“Code Blue” ends the disc with heavy drum sounds by Lee Morris. I can’t say I’m one for rap rock but the music that accompanies the song has a Zeppelin feel.
All I can say there is some amazing vocals and musicianship on Bangkok Rules. The songwriting is superior and Mr. Sabu still has that magic touch. Don’t forget to see Paul Live May 5-6 at the Z-Rock Festival in Bilston, England and show your support for the Paul Sabu Bangkok Rules record!
