It was hard to concentrate on the music with a hot babe on the cover. Your mind can run rampant with vulgar thoughts, just thinking of ideas. But as you put the disc on play, you can’t help but feel the Tool sensation taking over. Dark-sounding downbeats of the guitar by Pötter put you in a trance. “Vermilion” is one of those repetitive songs that burns into your memory like an evil twin. The title track “Kilt The Konvention” hooks up with tons of reverb, yet it adds some great lyrics and actually has a melodic flare. You definitely get the Edward Kowalczyk (Live) sense as an influence with Ezperanza.
I think seventeen tracks on “Kilt The Konvention” are a little too much: I would have cut back to twelve and just given the fans the prime meat of Ezperanza. One of the highlight tracks has to be “Die Young:” they might have been listening to Pearl Jam while writing this one. That’s just an outstanding tune. Going back to my last quote of just giving twelve tracks, there are some filler songs that should have been omitted to release a power-packed CD.
All in all the CD is very good, but cuts should have been made. One track that would be a keeper is “Save Yourself.” Listening to the track just shows that no matter how raw and hard your band is, you can still produce quality with a mellow melodic song. That is expressed with “Save Yourself”. These guys should be watched carefully on the next release, but in the mean time pick up “Kilt The Konvention”- there are many good tunes to be heard.
