Anyone who knows our site, and anyone who knows me, knows that RockEyez has been an avid supporter of CRASHDIET since 2005. The band had to strive through many hurdles and have always managed to come out on top, while bringing sleaze metal to great heights. With the passing of Dave Lepard and then the departure of second vocalist Ollie the band seemingly found gold with the former lead vocalist of JAILBAIT, Simon Cruz. His first effort with CRASHDIET “Generation Wild” was a rejuvenating and refreshing sound that kept to the classic drive of the band with tracks like” Generation Wild”, “Down With The Dust” “Bound To Fall” and many others. “Generation Wild” was one heluva killer CD and brought new life to the band. Now it’s 2013 and the new release is about to hit stores shortly and I had a chance to listen to the CD for about three weeks now and I hope the band can appreciate my views so here we go. Tears came to my eyes as I listened over and over again. This is not CRASHDIET the kings of sleaze I know and love. I tried my best to like “Savage Playground” but was so disappointed my favorite band was seemingly falling by the wayside. There are a couple fair tracks and maybe one or two real good ones but overall I did not like the production and the songs are just all over the place. At times Simon Cruz seems to be reaching with his vocals. I just don’t know how you go from “Generation Wild” to “Savage Playground” and not mention also adding keyboards. Sleaze metal is raw, in-your-face kick ass music but “Savage Playground” is something that I just can’t figure out what happened. As I said there are a few good songs and a few fair songs but I was truly disappointed overall.

The disc starts off with “Change The World”, which is a good tune that gave me hope in starting off on a good note. The bass line of Peter London adds depth to the track with Eric Young leading the tempo. Martin Sweet has some killer licks and Simon shines here. “Cocaine Cowboy” which is the first single and video off of “Savage Playground” is a fair track but it really didn’t excite me all that much. It’s passable at best. “Anarchy” was another one of the better tunes but I am at a loss to what happened to those killer background vocals and harmonies that lifted the songs in the past.

CRASHDIET try for some diversity with the song “California” but this is not the BEACH BOYS this is supposed to be CRASHDIET! Maybe they were trying to get radio airplay with this one? It kinda sounds like an early version of NELSON. I’m just going to skip talking about the track “Lickin’ Dog”. “Circus” is not in the style of the true CRASHDIET sound but I really liked this one regardless. It has good drive with killer harmonies and the band picks up some killer guitar work by Martin Sweet. “Sin City”, we’ll skip this one too as it’s just a bad tune. I think we’ll skip “Got A Reason” too and also “Drinkin’ Without You”. It was killing me hearing those three tunes in a row but then “Snakes In Paradise” might be the worst song on the disc. Some songs give me hope but this one is horrible.

“Damaged Kid” is a fair to average song but just didn’t bring CRASHDIET to a climax. I like the beginning of “Excited” as it kind of has the sound of Bryan Ferry a semi-ballad style that shows a softer side to CRASHDIET. Ending the disc is “Garden Of Babylon” which I hoping would blow me away but damn I was wrong again.

Will the real CRASHDIET stand up and show your original sleaze sound again. I still love you guys, just not on “Savage Playground”.
