Fresh from the studio with a new CD in the can, EXTREME played a special invitation-only gig as part of Washburn’s after hours NAMM party. While the lighting was a little rough, it went hardly noticed to the capacity-filled room of eager industry folk. This night, everybody was just a fan. And EXTREME didn’t disappoint. The recently reformed band was on fire! The lucky attendees were treated to a full 2-hour set, showcasing the new song “Slide” as well as new drummer, Kevin Figuieredo. Nothing like the highly technical Mangini,
Kevin is more of a simplistic groove player, similar to original drummer (and now band manager) Paul Geary. His addition brings the band a “back to their roots” quality and establishes him as more than capable of providing perfect renditions of all the classic favorites.
While Gary almost canceled due to a foot injury, you’d never know by his fantastic performance. He’s still one of the great front men in rock, displaying constant motion and boundless energy throughout the evening. To say nothing of his voice! Sounding as good as ever, he definitely hasn’t lost anything to the years.
But what would NAMM be without the guitar hero? The Nuno worshippers were definitely out in full force. (It was a room full of musicians, after all!) And from the reactions, it certainly appeared that he satisfied even the most jaded spectators.
So, what’s next for the reunited EXTREME? As previously mentioned, a full album of new material is set for release, and a solid year of touring is being booked as we speak. (With Rocklahoma already being confirmed.) 2008 looks to be an exciting year for patient EXTREME fans. And from the show I witnessed – it should prove to be worth the wait!
Special thanks to John & Rob for setting it all up.
